Parish Gift Day

Many thanks to all those who supported the Parish Gift Day in September. A total of £2208 was raised, including £150 from the sale of the Vicar's books on the day and following a guided tour of All Saints which he conducted for very lively members of the University of the Third Age from Saltburn.

Sponsored Cycle Ride                                       Saturday 13th September

The Cyclists set off.

This was our 4th annual cycle ride for the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust where half of the £897 raised is used to support the maintenance of our own churches and the other half donated to the YHCT, who made a very generous grant to St Mary's restoration at Rievaulx. Many thanks to all those who cycled and their sponsors. Dick Clough's brand new routes exploring the beautiful countryside around Harome, Nunnington, Slingsby and Wombleton proved very popular. There were 15 participants, ranging in age from 9 to over 70.

Ruth Wilbourne writes:
The Saturday morning traffic was in for quite a surprise as it came across the 15 Helmsley Church cyclists. We made our way through Harome to Nunnington and up the sudden steep climb to Nunnington Church. After cycling along the ridge above Nunnington Hall, we split into two groups, with 9 people heading down past East Ness and towards Welburn on the 19 mile route, and the remaining 6 continuing towards Slingsby on the 29 mile route. At Slingsby Church we were relieved to discover a wonderful spread of drinks and biscuits laid on for passing cyclists. As we progressed to Barton-le-Street, the brilliant views towards the North York Moors were overshadowed by ominous dark clouds: the heavy rain had obviously passed by our route recently, leaving a choice between a roller-coaster style water-splash or a wet chicane as we navigated the puddles. However, we made it relatively mud-free to the lovely villages of Butterwick, and then Salton, which a week before would have been impossible due to flooding. There we were again delighted to find refreshments to revive us prior to the home straight through Welburn, Wombleton and Harome and finally reaching Helmsley where we could give our legs a well-earned break.

So congratulations go to everyone who took part: Paddy and Dick Clough, Erica and Issy Zarb and their cousin Caroline, Richard, Amy and Laura Laycock, Anne Stewart, Simon Goodman, Mike Rutter, Alec Magson, Martin Vander Weyer, and David, Clare and Ruth Wilbourne. Many thanks go to Dick Clough for designing the new routes, which helped to make this our most popular ride yet.

Thank you to everyone who has pledged and donated sponsorship money; if you haven't yet it's not too late, just give a donation to the Vicar or anyone else who took part, and let's see how much we can raise for our historic churches.

Cakes in the Churchyard                              Saturday 12 July

A record total of £785 was raised on 12 July, when the sun shone on a happy band of sellers and buyers. Many thanks to Paddy Clough and Joyce Westhead and all those who served, sold, cooked and bought. Derek Bradley's Ruby Austin 7 again drew a lot of attention, with one visitor offering him a considerable sum for his prize possession. We were also immensely grateful to all those local businesses who were contacted by the Vicar and donated delicious produce which made the stall so attractive and really boosted our funds, including the Black Swan, the Feversham Arms, the Feathers, Castlegate Bakery and Café, The Beck Tea Rooms, the Cinnamon Twist, Perns and Otterburns Café.

Friends of All Saints Lottery

WIN £500 or £25 on the ALL SAINTS LOTTERY

All Saints operates a lottery as a way of raising funds for the parish.

The prizes are £25 each month between September and June with additional 'super' prizes of £500 in March and in December.

The subscription is £1 per month for each of the ten draws, that is £10 per year. The £10 subscription can be paid in cash, by cheque or by standing order. (The latter greatly simplifies the administration for the promoter.)

We have around 300 subscribers and clear around £1,750 per year which goes into church funds. So a subscription gives you the chance to contribute to the church with the possible benefit of winning £500. That seems a good investment and remember 'IF YOU'RE NOT IN YOU CAN'T WIN'.

Please make a subscription by ringing the promoter Keith Elliot, on 01439 771866, or by completing an entry form (also available in church and at the two newsagents in the town).

To print out the entry form or the standing order form, you will need Adobe Acrobat, which can be downloaded from here.

St Chad, Sproxton

129 Musical Concert in St Chad's Sproxton

Sunday 11 May at 5.00pm

A one-off concert to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the moving of St Chad's church to its present site, has now been repeated four times. On the evening of 11 May this year we held Sproxton129 and, once again, everything combined to provide us with a wonderfully, inspiring occasion. The church was filled to bursting; the weather was Mediterranean like; the infectious enthusiasm of the young musicians from St Martin's Ampleforth added a sparkle to the music which they played and sang so well; the food and wine in the churchyard after the performance were enjoyed by all the guests as they looked across the open country into the setting sun. In truth, as the vicar remarked afterwards, the occasion was a genuine act of worship and gave us all a great deal for which we should give thanks and praise. In addition to enjoying the occasion we made £165 towards church funds. (Keith Elliot)

The Vicar adds: These have been epoch-making concerts, packed full of talent with the little church packed full of people. On behalf of us all I am very grateful to Keith and Pat and their team for making them such memorable occasions and showing us what can be done with the hamlet chapels - actually leading the way for similar events like the carol concerts at East Moors.
