Paul started playing the organ at
the age of 12 but gave it up when he left school. He only returned
to playing at the age of 53 when he moved to Hartoft, near Rosedale
Abbey, and heard there was no regular organist in the parish.
He now wishes he had not taken the 38 year break!
Organist at Helmsley since 2005, he thinks,"the combination
of an excellent Harrison & Harrison organ, coupled with the
fine acoustics and, of course, the wonderful singing of the congregation,
makes services here most enjoyable occasions." He is "keen
on providing a musical backdrop to our services which can enhance
the mood and bring about a closer and deeper meaning." His
favourite composers are Grieg, Faure, Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert
and his favourite hymn tunes Blaenwern, Melita, Repton and Down
Ampney.
Born and brought up in Hull, where his father was a church organist,
his favourite football team is, of course, Hull City. Indeed his
hobbies list is "music, stamp-collecting, hill-walking, horse-racing,
in fact all sport, especially football." Paul
is a retired financial adviser and, having run a successful business
in Hull for 25 years, is now looking forward to doing "a
bit more practising" in his retirement. He
is married to Bridget, a regular worshipper at Helmsley, and has
2 sons and 5 grandchildren.
