Who's who

Alex has lived in Helmsley all his life and as a boy sang in the church choir. When his voice broke, he became a server and a bellringer. A churchwarden for almost 18 years, he was instrumental in the 1980s in initiating an appeal for the restoration of the church tower and bells. So he was the obvious choice to become tower captain. Married to Sheila, they have three children and six grandchildren. He retired from work as a legal executive in 1996 but definitely not from bellringing.
