Who's who

Appointment of Priest-in-Charge of the Benefices of Helmsley and Upper Ryedale

The Reverend Timothy James (Tim) Robinson, Associate Priest (NSM) in Sharow with Copt Hewick and Marton-le-Moor (Ripon and Leeds) has been appointed Priest-in-Charge of the benefice of Helmsley and of the benefice of Upper Ryedale.

Mr Robinson will be licensed by the Bishop of Whitby and installed by the Archdeacon of Cleveland at 6pm on Sunday 5 September 2010 at All Saints, Helmsley.

Here, Revd Tim Robinson introduces himself…

I am absolutely delighted to be appointed Priest in Charge of Helmsley and Upper Ryedale. It will not be long before the summer is over (assuming it isn't already!) and I will be out and about visiting and meeting church-goers and the wider community. Meanwhile, I hope this thumbnail sketch is helpful by way of introduction.

I have felt called to be an Anglican priest ever since I can remember. Early influences include watching Winston Churchill's funeral on television, singing in church choirs, playing the organ, discovering the smell of incense, and time spent with religious communities at Taizé, Scargill and Iona.

After college I taught music for a while in London before training for the priesthood at St Stephen's House Theological College, Oxford. I spent a very happy time as a curate in Acklam, a suburban parish in Middlesbrough before becoming vicar in North Ormesby, an urban village in the heart of the same town. In North Ormesby the church community raised quarter of a million pounds from the European Social Fund for sustainable regeneration: I am proud that the results can still be seen today.

Since 2000 I have been teaching in one of Middlesbrough's 'challenging' secondary schools. This has been a rich source of sermon material at Sharow, just north of Ripon, where I have been associate priest.

I am married to Helen, a barrister. Between us we have four children; Hannah (22) and Joe (20) from my first marriage; Tom (19) and Anna (17) from Helen's. We will establish a base in Helmsley whilst the new Helmsley vicarage is being built. We will also keep our family home in Ripon, to allow us to see Anna through her final year at Ripon Grammar School and (we hope) on to university.

My passions are music and food. Helen is a gardener and a much better cook than me!

The licensing takes place at 6pm on Sunday, 5 September in All Saints Church, Helmsley. I very much look forward to being with you.

From Sunday 22nd March 2009, The Reverend Canon David Wilbourne ceased to be the Vicar of the Parishes of Helmsley and Upper Ryedale, having been appointed Assistant Bishop of Llandaff.

A separate page about David Wilbourne, detailing his appointment, his publications, books and sermons can be found here.

During the Interregnum, Canon Francis Hewitt and Reverend Ben Nicholson have been carrying out his duties.

Canon Francis Hewitt

We are very fortunate to have the guidance and support during the Inter-regnum of Canon Francis Hewitt, the former vicar of Pickering, who will be taking most of our Sunday morning and Wednesday services.

Here, Francis introduces himself…

Canon Francis Hewitt

I am a Yorkshireman born and bred, and have lived all my life in the broad acres. My formative years were spent in York where my father (also a Canon of York) was Headmaster of the Minster Song School and David Senior taught me to serve and carry a candle in the Minster. My only other claim to fame is that I was Captain of Rugby at St. Peter's School.

I then spent five years at St. Chad's College, Durham, doing a degree and then a diploma in theology as well as training for the Ministry. After marriage to Brenda and ordination in Wakefield Cathedral, I spent 15 years in the West Riding - in Dewsbury, Fixby (Huddersfield) where I learned to play golf, and then finally at King Cross in Halifax - the Anglo-Catholic 'cathedral' of that part of Yorkshire.

Thirty years ago, I came up to North Yorkshire as Vicar of Lastingham and once more followed in David Senior's footprints as Rural Dean of Helmsley. Then I was Vicar and Rural Dean of Pickering until I retired 18 months ago. Brenda has also retired, first from being Head of French at Ampleforth College and then from being Principal French Oral Examiner for Edexcel. Now we live in a bungalow in Kirkbymoorside and enjoy our garden, the birds and taking holidays!

Helmsley and district has always been a 'favourite place' and so I hope that I can help you all, and particularly your curate Ben Nicholson, through this Interregnum - and that if you need a priest you will feel able to call on me. As well as the Sunday morning services, I shall also be in Church for the 9.30 am on Wednesdays and will be available then should anyone need me.
